Atari is moving forward from bankruptcy into becoming a company competing in the market. In the past, Atari was primarily a hardware company and that may have been part of it's downfall. The Chairman of the Board and CEO, Frederic Chesnais, “Today, we have a company that is out of bankruptcy, and we are 10 people working under the studio-production model."
“We pay attention to three things: the IP, the production, and the distribution. Everything else is not our part. We go to and select third-party studios who make very good games. They are not a part of the company at the moment. And then we go into production, like a movie studio. So we select the IP’s; we go one-by-one and select the best one. We pick the one we want to do. There’s no rush.”
The current model for video game release has independent software / game companies create the game and the hardware company (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) publish the game. When you start up a game you'll normally see the names of the companies that created the game come up as the game is loading. But in the recent years, there has been a shift by the independent software / game creation companies to go directly after the gamers and bypass the hardware companies. With online availability, gamers can download new games for free or pay the creation company.
Where does this leave Atari? Chesnais will have to create a model incorporating Atari, gamers, software companies and other players to monetize all the factors. This is no simple task because things change so quickly.
